Start with the sheriff's inmate list. Go to scsdonline.com and look through the current roster. Each entry shows the inmate's name, booking date, and charges. If you cannot find the person on the active list, they may have already been released from the Stanislaus County Jail. In that case, try VINE or submit a records request.

For those, stick with the sheriff's inmate list or contact the jail in Modesto directly.

California Law on Stanislaus County Records

Government Code 7923.610 requires every law enforcement agency in California to make certain arrest data public. The Stanislaus County Sheriff must disclose the full name and occupation of every person they arrest. The law also covers physical descriptions, date of birth, arrest time and date, booking details, charges, bail amount, and the time and manner of release. This applies to all Stanislaus County released inmates. The only exception is if sharing a detail would put someone at risk or hurt an active investigation. This statute took effect January 1, 2023.

Parolee data follows a different rule. Penal Code 3003 says CDCR must tell local law enforcement about every person released on parole. This covers names, physical descriptions, scars, tattoos, offenses, and the address where the released inmate will live in Stanislaus County. Parolees must go back to the county where they lived before prison. CDCR can grant a transfer in some situations, but the default rule sends people home. Each released inmate gets $200 in release funds when they leave a state prison.

You can also file a formal records request under the California Public Records Act. The DOJ PRA page explains the process. Agencies must respond within 10 calendar days and can take an extra 14 days for unusual requests. For Stanislaus County jail records, send your request to the sheriff's office. For state-level records, go through CDCR's Public Records Portal.
